Wazir – a captivating thriller

dofirstlookamitabhbachchanandfarhanakhtarinanintenseconversations_1413525585 A story about two unlikely friends, a capable ATS officer and a wheel chair bound chess grandmaster who is brought together by a quirk of ill fate, and who decides to help each other succeed in their mission, Wazir certainly didn’t disappoint.

2015 has been pretty much disastrous when it came to my choice of movies that I watched in the theatres. Of course, I did everything right. I read reviews, I took in advices from friends who had previously watched them, I even looked up trailers in Youtube. But ultimately, when I sat down with a pack of popcorn, a bottle of water, and expectations running high, I must admit that the bland popcorn seemed more interesting. Last Saturday, a spur-of-the-moment decision saw me and Varun (my son) sitting inside the Aroma theatre in Palakkad, ( which still believes in retaining its old world charm, that pretty much includes rows of uncomfortable seating) to watch the latest Amitabh – Farhan thriller, Wazir. There were barely 20 people in the theatre for the second show, and we couldn’t help glancing at each other wondering if it was yet another stupid decision. But two of my favourite actors were playing the central characters in the movie and I really hoped that it wouldn’t be a flop.

A story about two unlikely friends, a capable ATS officer and a wheel chair bound chess grandmaster who is brought together by a quirk of ill fate, and who decides to help each other succeed in their mission, Wazir certainly didn’t disappoint. In fact, it thrilled to the core. Director Bejoy Nambiar seems to have got it right. The narrative is powerfully gripping that I was literally sitting on the edge of my chair (popcorn forgotten). The first half, especially was amazingly awesome with an impeccable storyline and some flawless acting. Actually, what makes the movie so very potent is the fact that not just Amitabh or Farhan, but every single actor has done great justice to their respective roles be it Aditi Rao Hydari who plays Farhan’s pretty wife, Manav Kaul in the negative act, or Neil Nithin Mukesh with his cameo role as the elusive Wazir. Terrorism is a much explored subject in our movies, but i should definitely credit the director for having given a different approach to the storyline and its depiction. Wazir does portray revenge, but there is no cold blooded anger in the movie that could have made it sickeningly melodramatic. Instead, we find more of a focused and intelligent planning among the protagonists, in the quest to attain their mission… rather like a game of chess. Goof up’s do exist, so does a few unbelievable tactics in the plot, but then all that seems insignificant when pitted with the powerful narrative and some skilful acting. Music is good and a few soothing songs do touch the heart, like ‘Tere bin’ and ‘Maula Maula’. Wazir – Definitely a good movie to watch, especially for its power packed performances…
