A Sweet Morning
Some fragrances don't just fill a house; they fill the heart.
There is something extremely heady about the whiff of gram flour (besan) being fried in ghee. The fragrance itself is so mouthwateringly delicious and loudly proclaims that something special is being made in the kitchen.
This is exactly what hit me as soon as I opened the door of my room this morning.
My mother was making Mysorepak!
Anyone who has tried making this Indian delicacy at home will vouch for it. Known for its sweet, melt-in-the-mouth consistency, Mysorepak is simply pure magic when it comes to taste. The commercially available ones are something else, but make it at home and you have the added bonus of inhaling that rich aroma which accompanies its preparation.
And when it is made by the loving hands of an indulgent mother, the taste and aroma seem to double, making it truly a heavenly treat.
And that is just what I got to enjoy today!
It was indeed a heartwarming, ecstatic sight to find my mother standing near the stove, stirring the gram flour which was merrily sizzling away in pure, homemade ghee inside the hot pan. The sugar syrup and more melted ghee were kept nearby, ready to be added at the appropriate time.
Minutes of pouring and stirring, and there it was!
A thali filled with golden-brown Mysorepak, neatly cut into diamond shapes.
The best part of eating homemade Mysorepak is that you get to sample it while it is still warm and fresh.
Yummmm… what a sweet beginning to an absolutely awesome day!
